Jon Udell on O'Reilly
Jon Udell is a leading web expert. Check out his articles on O'Reilly, an important technical publisher. In particular, you should read his posts on "The Heavy Metal Umlaut," "The New Freshmen Comp" and "Screencasting Strategies."
Udell argues for the importance of incorporating skills in video and sound recording as part of the basic literacy of college education (i.e. Freshman Comp.). His primary interest is in this practice of "screencasting" (his term), which is the practice of integrating simple videos into the web.
While you're at it, check out this screencast.

I read Udell's "The New Freshmen Comp." His ideas were interesting, and although at first it was automatic for me to reject the idea of including anything in Freshmen Comp other than the teaching of writing, I thought about this idea and finally agreed. If you think about it, our society is becoming more and more technology based. Pretty soon, if not already, not having advanced technology skills in the work world is going to be like how it is to not have a college degree now. I don't think that any emphasis should be taken from the writing aspect of fresmen comp now. In fact, I'm the one who thinks more core writing classes should be required of all college students, especially those in the humanities majors. But, I think a class very similar to freshmen comp should be required of all freshmen. This class should teach the basics about many apects of technology, such as online writing, and as Udell suggests the teaching of video and sound recording. Technology is becoming such a significant aspect of all areas of work, and regardless on one's major, learning some of the basics about technology can be very beneficial.
