A New Way to Safer Sex
by Ashley Pichura, SUNY Cortland, May 5, 2008

Looking for a new way to safer sex? Well, now there is a female condom that sexually active people can use. The female condom in a pouch that is inserted into the vagina that is used to prevent pregnancy, reduce the risk of sexually transmitted infections and it can be used for vaginal and anal intercourse. It is easy to get and it costs about four dollars each. If the pills, shots, regular condoms or other methods aren’t working out, trying the female condom might be the way to go.
To be exact, the female condom it a plastic pouch that is used during sex. It is inserted deep into the vagina and it has flexible rings at each end of it. The closed end of the condom is the first to go in and that is what will hold it in the vagina. The other end of the condom will be open and will remain on the outside of the vaginal opening.
Female condoms are pretty effective when preventing pregnancy. If it is used correctly about five out of one hundred women will get pregnant each year and it is not used correctly about twenty-one out of one hundred women will become pregnant a year. They are extremely safe and and virtually anyone who wants to use one, can.
There are many benefits to using a female condom. Many women and men like them for various reasons. This method lets women bear the the responsibility of preventing infection; it gives control to the woman. Female condoms are as easily accessible as regular condom; they can be found in drugstores and sometimes grocery stores.
Partners can get involved and actually insert it as a form of foreplay and it can actually enhance sex play because the external ring might just stimulate the clitoris (girls you should try it out!) Anyone with allergies to latex will be safe using the female condom without worrying about allergic reactions. It can be used with any type of lube whether it is oil-based or water-based. Luckily, it stays right in place and does not move and it does not matter if the guy is fully erect or not.
There are, however, some disadvantages to the female condom. It can actually cause irritation to the vagina, vulva, penis, or anus, if not positioned and inserted correctly it can slip into the vagina or the anus during intercourse. It does reduce some feeling during sex and it can be somewhat noisy, so add extra lube to quiet the condom down. As one can see though, the positive does out weigh the negative.
Inserting the female condom is actually very similar to inserting a tampon. First, cover the outside of the condom with some type of lube or spermicide. Next find a position, whether it is lying down, standing up, or squatting. Then, squeeze the sides of the inner ring together at the closed end of the condom and insert into the vagina just like a tampon. Next, push the inner ring as far as it will go so pretty much right to the cervix. Last, pull finger out and let the outer ring hang out about an inch outside the vagina. To remove, just squeeze and twist the outer ring so that the semen won’t escape and gently pull it out of the vagina then throw away. DO NOT FLUSH IT. Also, for those that might ask, do not reuse it either. See, quick and simple.
As one can see it is easy and safe to use. Many people are looking for new ways to have safe and enjoyable sex and this may be a new way for all parties to do so. Try it out and see how it works, it is worth a shot. Whether it is like or disliked always use safer sex practices!
